Sensitive Content Warning:
EyCon digitizes visual and textual material from physical sources including the illustrated press, photographic albums, and loose photo collections, and also displays images and associated metadata gathered from numerous digital repositories. This visual and textual material was originally produced in a colonial context and contains images as well as words, terms, and phrases that are often decontextualizing, inaccurate, derogatory, or potentially harmful to the descendants of colonized people. Nor are such images and terms epistemologically “neutral”—they were produced in a context of political domination, economic exploitation, and violence.
Offensive, harmful, or otherwise outdated language in the database is in no way representative of EyCon’s views—we maintain an anti-colonial and anti-racist position and affirm our support for the humanity of colonized peoples and their descendants. We have reproduced the images and the original text that accompanied them because we are convinced that only by studying the records left behind by colonialism may we arrive at new and better historical interpretations that will contribute to more just collective futures. We ask that researchers and users engage with the database materials in this spirit, in ways that are ethical and intellectually rigorous.
At the same time, we are committed to updating and enriching the database metadata by integrating knowledge from scholars, users, and affected communities. If you encounter material that is distressing or harmful and would like to voice concerns or add contextual metadata to the database, you may write to us at: eycon.project@gmail.com.
